Create a new template
Use this procedure to create a new template using the Templates wizard. You can build the configuration from scratch or use a model device as a starting point, then define the components, settings, and behavior the template will control. This approach is best when you need a new or significantly different configuration that is not based on an existing template.
-
Log in to Digi Remote Manager.
-
Configure a model device.
Tip Because you are creating a brand new template, use the model device to develop the device configuration you want to import into the template. . Make sure the device is functioning correctly with the new changes. Troubleshoot any issues before proceeding.
For guidance about configuring your device, refer to your product-specific DAL OS user guide.
-
Create a new group, if needed, and add a devices(s) to the group that you want to update.
At this point, your model device is configured and tested. You also have a group containing a test device that your new template will scan and then remediate using the new configuration so you can make sure the template functions correctly. Now, you are ready to create the new template.
-
In the left navigation menu, click Templates to open the Templates page.
-
Click Create.
The wizard opens.
-
Click each tab in the wizard to configure your template.
Details
-
Complete the Details card.
-
Complete the Device Configuration card.
-
For Device Type, choose the product model of your devices (for example, EX15 or XBee Gateway).
-
For Firmware Version, select the version you want devices in the group to use. If your model device uses a newer version, select that version. If the template will not update firmware, choose the version currently running on the target devices.
Note Watch for firmware-specific caution statements. When selecting the firmware version in a template, firmware-specific caution statements may appear based on the version chosen. These messages provide important information such as known limitations, compatibility considerations, step updates, or other impacts. Review all caution statements carefully before proceeding, as they may affect device behavior, deployment success, or overall system stability.
Tip Step-firmware update may be needed. Do you want to use a template to update your devices to a new configuration, but you've been cautioned about a step-firmware update that must be done first? If so, you can use an automation to update all the devices in the group to the required step-firmware version, and then use the new template to update them to the newer configuration. You can also configure this automation to run before the template performs it scan. You can enable an automation to run before a scan starts on the Scanning tab.
-
Components
If you created a new template, you can configure the components.
If you copied a template, then the components that were enabled in the template you copied are also enabled in your new one.
Configure your template as needed. As you enable or disable the components, the wizard adds or subtracts tabs to/from the workflow.

Description
Cellular Modem Firmware
Manage and update the firmware for cellular modems on your devices to ensure that they are running the latest version for optimal connectivity and security.
Note You will not see this step if you do not have a modem in or attached to your devices, your modems do not support being updated via templates, or you are running 24.9 or older firmware.
eSIM
Configure and manage eSIM profiles for cellular connectivity. Remotely provision and switch between eSIM carriers without physical SIM card swaps.
Note If you do have this feature, it is only available for eSIM-capable devices.
If you do not have this feature, it won't be in the list of components you can enable.
Containers
Deploy and manage containerized applications on your devices.
Note If you do not have this feature, it won't be in the list of components you can enable.
File System
Upload and manage files on your devices' file systems. Deploy configuration files, scripts, certificates, and other assets to your devices.
Settings
Configure device settings and parameters. Define and enforce device configuration policies to ensure consistent behavior across our fleet.
This is where you will select a model device from which to copy its configuration to the template.
Python
Add Python to your device.
File System
Upload and organize the files required for your device. Make any changes, or continue to the next step.
Settings
Review the settings imported from the model device, and modify, or remove as needed.
-
If you skip this step, none of the settings are imported to the new template.
Note All device settings imported into a template are marked as Managed by default.
After the settings are imported, you can also use a CSV file to specify site-specific settings.
Maintenance and Compliance
Define how the template behaves during maintenance windows and how devices are remediated and kept compliant with the device configuration in the template.
Remediation
-
Enable Device Remediation to automatically update devices that are found to be out of compliance with the device configuration in the template.
-
Disable Device Remediation to automatically scan the devices for compliance but not automatically updated.
Disabling remediation allows you to review the changes that would be applied before enabling automatic updates.
See Template scan scheduling and maintenance windows for more information about template scans, service status, and maintenance windows and how they work together to control when devices are evaluated and when actions are allowed to run.
Scanning
Define when and how devices are evaluated against the template. In this step, you configure the frequency and conditions for scans, which determine how often devices are checked for compliance and when remediation actions are triggered. You can also enable an automation to run before a scan begins, as well as after it's completed. Proper scanning helps ensure devices remain aligned with the device configuration in the template while balancing network and system impact.
Finalize & Review Define what group the template will scan, and view a consolidated summary of your template configuration before saving. This page brings together all selected components, settings, and behaviors in one place, allowing you to verify accuracy, identify any missing or incorrect configurations, and make final adjustments to ensure the template is ready for deployment.
Scan Results
Monitor how devices are evaluated against the template over time. This page provides visibility into scan outcomes, including compliance status, detected issues, and any remediation actions taken, helping you track performance and troubleshoot inconsistencies across your device fleet.

When you are done, click Save & Close to save the template and close the wizard.
Your new template is created and appears in the template list.
