About firmware

Firmware is the low-level software that runs directly on a device’s hardware, enabling it to function and communicate with other systems. It controls core operations such as system startup, hardware interaction, networking, and security, forming the foundation upon which higher-level software and applications operate.

Types of firmware at Digi

Digi devices rely on multiple types of firmware to deliver full functionality. These include the primary operating system firmware (DAL OSClosed Digi Accelerated Linux Operating System) and, in devices with cellular capability, separate firmware that runs on embedded cellular modems. Each type serves a distinct role but works together to ensure reliable device operation and connectivity.

For cellular modems

Depending on how your devices are managed, you can update the cellular modem firmware locally via the Web UI or CLI consoles, as well as remotely via Digi Remote Manager.

For your devices

Your devices run DAL OS firmware and should be updated as new versions become available to maintain performance, security, and supportability. Digi uses an LTS strategy to guide these updates. Depending on how your devices are managed, you can update the DAL OS firmware locally via the Web UI or CLI consoles, as well as remotely via Digi Remote Manager.
