Creating a new template versus Copying an existing template
When working with templates in Digi Remote Manager, you can either create a new template or copy an existing one. Both approaches use the same wizard to guide you through the process, but they differ in where the initial device configuration is comes from.
Creating a new template allows you to build a device configuration from the ground up or start from a model device without inheriting prior settings.
Use this approach when:
-
You need a completely new configuration.
-
No existing template closely matches your requirements.
-
You want full control over all settings and components.
-
You are introducing new features, configurations, or deployment patterns.
With this method, you:
-
Define components and settings manually.
-
Optionally use a model device as a baseline.
-
Configure all behavior, compliance, and scanning settings from scratch.
Copying a template and saving it as a new one uses the configuration from an existing one as a starting point.
Use this approach when:
-
An existing template already closely matches your needs.
-
You want to reuse a proven configuration.
-
You are making incremental changes (for example, updating firmware or adjusting a few settings).
-
You want to maintain consistency across deployments.
With this method, you:
-
Start with prepopulated settings, files, and components.
-
Modify only what is necessary.
-
Still select a model device to validate and refine the configuration.

Summary
-
Create a new template when you need a fresh configuration or full control.
-
Copy a template when you want to reuse and adjust an existing setup.
Both approaches ultimately produce a new template and follow the same workflow - the difference is how much of the device configuration is predefined at the start.
