Best practice | Update the firmware on multiple routers using a template

Do you have multiple routers that require a firmware update? Do you want to update them using the same firmware version? Do you want to automate this process? If you answered Yes to these questions, a template is just what you need!

Digi recommends using a template and an incremental implementation approach when updating the firmware on your fleet of routers. Update the firmware on one router, and then test for compatibility, identify and mitigate problems, and make adjustments before updating the firmware on more routers. This type of controlled update protects your network from outages and minimizes user impact.

Prerequisites

  • Digi Remote Manager and the template feature.

  • At least two routers online and connected to Digi Remote Manager. One will be your model device and the other will be your test device that you add to your test group.

Workflow

  1. Follow the steps for creating a new template or copying an existing one.

  2. Enable your template if it isn't already.

  3. Manually initiate a template scan.

  4. Make sure the test router functions as it should with the new firmware.
  5. In the test group, add several more routers.

The routers are scanned and remediated automatically.

  6. Make sure the routers function as they should with the new firmware.

Repeat Step 5 until all your routers have been added to the group and are updated.

Tip Now that you have moved all your routers to a new group and those routers are now controlled by the new template, you may want to delete any old groups or templates superseded by the new ones you created.
