Update the DAL OS system firmware

Digi’s DAL OS firmware for Digi devices provides a managed, secure embedded operating system foundation that supports scheduled and ad-hoc updates to ensure device integrity and performance over time. DAL OS firmware can be updated locally using the device’s DAL OS Web UI console or the CLI console. Devices can be updated locally or remotely using Digi Remote Manager, which enables local updates on individual devices through the DAL OS Web UI or CLI consoles, and remote updates across multiple devices simultaneously using templates. The TX64 operating system firmware images consist of a single file with the following naming convention:

platform-version.bin

For example, TX64-25.2.54.xxx

Updating from releases prior to release 22.2

If you are updating your TX64 device by using the local Web UI, you must first update to release 22.2 prior to updating to the current release.

Python and DAL OS firmware updates

Make sure to check the Python version you are using and that it is compatible with the DAL OS firmware version to which you want to update. You may need to update any Python scripts you have so they are compatible with the Python running on the DAL OS firmware version you choose. Certificate management for firmware images

The system firmware files are signed to ensure that only Digi-approved firmware load onto the device. The TX64 device validates the system firmware image as part of the update process and only successfully updates if the system firmware image can be authenticated.

Downgrading

Downgrading to an earlier release of the firmware may result in the device configuration being erased.

Downgrading from firmware version 22.2.9.x

Beginning with firmware version 22.2.9.x, the TX64 device uses certificate-based communication for enhanced security when connecting to Digi Remote Manager. If you downgrade your firmware from version 22.2.9.x to version 21.11.x or previous, your device will no longer be able to communicate with Remote Manager.

To remedy this issue, select the device in Remote Manager and select Actions > Reset Device Certificate.

Update firmware over the air (OTA) from the Digi firmware server

 Web

Log into the TX64 WebUI as a user with full Admin access rights.
On the main menu, click System. Under Administration, click Firmware Update.
Click Download from server.

For Version:, select the appropriate version of the device firmware.
Click Update Firmware.

Update firmware from a local file

 Web

Download the TX64 operating system firmware from the Digi Support FTP site to your local machine.

Log into the TX64 WebUI as a user with full Admin access rights.

On the main menu, click System. Under Administration, click Firmware Update.
Click Choose file.
Browse to the location of the firmware on your local file system and select the file.
Click Update Firmware.

 Command line

Download the TX64 operating system firmware from the Digi Support FTP site to your local machine.
Select the device in Remote Manager and click Actions > Open Console, or log into the TX64 local command line as a user with full Admin access rights.
Depending on your device configuration, you may be presented with an Access selection menu. Type admin to access the Admin CLI.
Load the firmware image onto the device. We recommend using the /tmp directory.

> scp host hostname-or-ip user username remote remote-path local local-path to local

where:

hostname-or-ip is the hostname or IP address of the remote host.
username is the name of the user on the remote host.
remote-path is the path and filename of the file on the remote host that will be copied to the TX64 device.
local-path is the location on the TX64 device where the copied file will be placed.

For example:

> scp host 192.168.4.1 user admin remote /home/admin/bin/TX64-26.2.147.55.bin local /tmp/ to local

Verify that the firmware file has been successfully uploaded to the device:

Update the firmware by entering the system firmware update command, specifying the path and file name to the firmware file:

Reboot the device to run the new firmware image using the reboot command.

Once the device has rebooted, log into the TX64's command line as a user with Admin access and verify the running firmware version by entering the show system command.
